From time to time I like to invite others to write a guest blog. Irene Lewis-Wimbley is currently living out her God calling at Southside Community Center in Peoria, IL. I have known for several years and her love for people has always been evident. I am always excited to hear, from her, how God is moving within her ministry. Her relational approach to ministry has a way of impacting every life she connects with. She has written from her heart a message that is timely and needed.
I love all elephants!! I have them in my home décor they speak to my African esthetic. The creature is fascinating in social relationships and emotional expressions. I love all elephants except one kind; the pink ones. Big pink ones in the room with me and the people I love. In social settings, work, or even worse in the church. They sit in the corner looking at me with a smirk and look of disunity in their eyes. It is clear, that these kinds of elephants seem to know that I can see them, but far too often no one else can see them or even detect their presence. It has come to the place that I can sense their presence as I enter a room. Do you know what I am talking about? Have you experienced their presence? Well I consider myself something of an elephant slayer, in the proverbial sense of the word
You know, I noticed that these pink elephants enter the room every time I bring up the topic of Racial Bias, Cultural Competence, or Socio-economic topics like the racial-wealth gap. If I say the words White Privilege. I am almost guaranteed to sense pink elephant eyes looking at me. The fact of the matter is I have grown used to it. Especially in the political and social climate today. One day I noticed that I too let one into the room. Me, hater of the pink impostors, had let one slip in with the room and I had to find the crack it had entered in undetected.
