Die 90er – das wird gerne vergessen - das war die Zeit von Meg Ryan und der pastellfarbenen Liebeskomödien, die in jenen Jahren aus den Kinoprogrammen kaum wegzudenken waren. Vor allem der Riesenerfolg von Pretty Woman und Schlaflos in Seattle zog damals unzählige Varianten von „boy meets girl“-Geschichten nach sich. Einer der vielen Filme im Fahrwasser der großen Publikumshits war Mrs. Winterbourne von 1996, ein ziemlicher Flop, der seitdem längst in Vergessenheit geraten ist. Die Komödie erzählt eine Art Variation der Geschichte vom hässlichen Entlein: Im Mittelpunkt steht die hochschwangere Connie Doyle, die, vom Kindesvater sitzen gelassen wird und schließlich auf der Straße landet. Doch sie hat Glück im Unglück. Durch abenteuerliche Umstände hält man sie nach einem Zugunfall für die Verlobte des tödlich verunglückten Mr. Winterbourne aus reichem Hause. Auf dem vornehmen Anwesen der Familie wird sie von der „Schwiegermutter“ (Shirley MacLaine) so herzlich aufgenommen, dass sie es nicht übers Herz bringt, ihre wahre Identität zu beichten. Stattdessen verliebt sie sich in den Zwillingsbruder (Brendon Fraser in einer Prä-Mumien-Rolle) des Verstorbenen und verstrickt sich immer weiter in die Scharade um die angehende Mrs. Winterbourne.
Auch wenn sich das wie eine Mischung aus Pretty Woman und Während Du schliefst anhört, ist der Plot in Wahrheit viel älter. Das Drehbuch basiert nämlich auf dem Roman „I married a Dead Man“ von 1948, der zwei Jahre später zum ersten Mal mit Barbara Stanwyck unter dem Titel No man of her own als Film Noir adaptiert wurde. Die Noir-Elemente - gegen Ende wird ein unliebsamer Zeitgenosse beseitigt - bleiben auch in der Version von 1996 erhalten, werden hier aber zugunsten der zentralen Romanze und der komödiantischen Elemente deutlich abgeschwächt. Ohnehin inszeniert Richard Benjamin für einen Plot, in dem es um einen kaltblütigen Mord und derart viele abgezockte Lügen geht, erstaunlich betulich. Diese angezogene Handbremse, die weder
